This is a Carpenter Ant.

 How to identify Carpenter Ants:

A Carpenter Ant is most often a large black ant but there are yellow hues and red hues as well. These ants are larger than most other ants in the United States so they are normally easy to identify. There are non-winged and winged Carpenter Ants, and the winged ones have the nickname "Swarmers".

What do Carpenter Ants eat?

Carpenter Ants are often found in wood piles or under rotting or moist logs. Because of this you might think they eat wood, but they actual prefer to eat the grubs, worms and insects that dwell under these wood piles. They also, as with all ants, enjoy sweets from man-made sources or from the nectar that aphids produce.

How do Carpenter Ants get into my home or business?

Ants have a way of finding their way into your home without any extra help - they can sneak in through tiny crack or under your doors. But if you give an ant wings it can get into your home that much easier. They enter through small holes/openings and will climb right up between boards or sheetrock.

How do I get rid of Carpenter Ants?

Carpenter Ants will live inside your home, especially if the majority of your house is built out of wood, or if the wooden structure has been damaged due to weather. To get rid of Carpenter Ants you will have to find the nest and destroy it. We can talk to you about removing moisture from your house and access points. Carpenter Ants can destroy a wooden structure, just like termites, so it's very important you contact a professional ant exterminator (like us!) as soon as possible. A small investment now can save you a ton in property damage from these ants!
